Description: Photograph showing two young men helping an elderly woman cross floodwaters in Gambier, Ohio, January 21, 1959. During the statewide flood of January 1959, rains of 3 to 6 inches produced the most destructive flooding in Ohio since March 1913. Soil frozen a foot deep was overlain by a snow cover. A band of heavy rain fell across central Ohio on the headwaters of many of the state’s largest rivers, causing the snow to melt, and with the ground frozen, nearly all of the water poured into streams. Streams reached flood stage from January 21 to 24, killing 16 people, forcing 49,000 from their homes, and causing extensive damage to homes, businesses, roads, and bridges. The streets of Mansfield were under four feet of water, and industries were closed by floodwaters in Youngstown and Canton. Columbus was the most severely affected of Ohio’s major cities, with many streets flooded, 100 homes badly damaged, and 3,200 evacuees cared for at Red Cross shelters. One-third of Chillicothe was flooded when the Scioto River broke through a levee of sandbags. High water and ice jams on the Sandusky River flooded Upper Sandusky, Tiffin, and Fremont. Despite its intensity, deaths and damage were not as great in 1959 as in the March 1913 flood. Following the destruction of 1913, flood-control reservoirs were built, and by 1959, there was better communication of warnings, more organized rescue work, and more adequate design of bridges and other structures. Description: This Gothic Revival home in Gambier currently houses the Kenyon Review, an influential and honored literary magazine. The Kenyon Review was established in 1938 after the president of Kenyon College, Gordon Keith Chalmers, brought John Crowe Ransom, a distinguished poet and critic, to Gambier Hill. Before housing the Kenyon Review, the home was called the Peter Neff Cottage and was used as the home of Kenyon College's Deans of Students. The home was renamed to honor John L. and Mary C. Finn, whose son, James, was a Kenyon Review trustee who provided the funding to restore the home. Peter Neff graduated from Kenyon College in 1849 and helped develop the first successful tintype photographs in America and was later involved in the oil and gas business in eastern Ohio. Description: Located near the entrance to Kenyon College, this Early Gothic Revival style cottage, built around 1860, might have been designed by the architect William Tinsley, who also designed Ascension Hall at Kenyon College. The cottage owner, Peter Neff, was a Kenyon College graduate who, along with a Kenyon professor, invented the tintype. Description: Dated ca. 1861-1865, this is a photograph of American Civil War Brigadier General John Sanford Mason. Mason was born in Steubenville, Ohio, in 1824 and attended Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio, and Washington College in Pennsylvania before being appointed to the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York, in 1843. Description: Robert Roy Reeves Sr., was born on June 21, 1886, in Kansas City, Missouri. He attended Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio, for two years. In 1908 he obtained his architecture degree from Carnegie Technical Institute where he was a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity. In 1911 he married Helen Gest; the couple had a son, Robert Roy Reeves Jr., who also became an architect. The elder Reeves worked in the Columbus, Ohio, office of Frank C. Packard from 1908 to 1916. He subsequently formed the partnership Miller and Reeves with Orlando C. Miller until 1928. After Miller left the firm it was known as Robert R. Reeves, Architect. Among the best known examples of Reeves's work is the YMCA at 65 South Fourth Street, a Georgian design which won the architect award in the Groswold Memorial Competition in 1923. The following year, Reeves was commissioned to construct a hospice in Montfaucon, France, as a war memorial for the Ohio 37th Division. From 1927 to 1932, Reeves designed a residential development on East Broad Street in Bexley, Ohio, known as Sessions Village, heavily inspired by the layout of historic European villages. The location, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, features cobblestone streets, a stone enclosure, and a "village center" with a traditional fountain. View on Ohio Memory.
